14 Different Wedding Or Matrimony Types in India



Marriage in India is an iconic affair and is marked by the unique auspicious ceremonies in different regions and states of India.
Here are the different wedding cultures in India with auspicious traditions and ceremonies which are as follows:-

1. Bengali Matrimony
Bengali wedding is well known for its auspicious rituals. One of the vital rituals in Bengali matrimony is ‘Saat Paak’ where the non manglik or manglik bride, having her face covered with beetel leaves circles seven times around the groom. Shubhodristi is another important ceremony followed by Saat Paak in which the bride being manglik or non manglik removes the leaves from her face and the couple eyes are met finally.  Blowing of the conch shells follows this ritual.

2. Malyali Wedding
Wedding in Kerala are well known for its significance and meanings with awesome functions that are followed in sequence. Malyalam matrimony or wedding is held in the morning and the conjugal ceremony performed is called ‘Velli’. 3. Assamese Wedding

4. Kannada Matrimony
During the wedding time, the bride is brought to be seated at the mandap by her sisters. A fan made out of peacock feathers is used to cover the face of the bride. After that, the bride’s parent performs the ritual called ‘Dhare Herdu’ and gives away their daughter to the groom being non manglik or manglik. It is followed by ‘Satapadi’ ritual in which the couple takes seven circles of the holy fire.

5. Gujrati Matrimony
The wedding starts with exchanging of Jaimaala two times. Gujrati’s take four Pheras known as Mangal Pheras.The couple takes four circles around the holy fire which are symbols of ‘ Dharma’, ‘Artha’, ‘Kama’ and ‘Moksha’.

6. Buddhist Wedding
Since Buddhism is based on simple lifestyles, their weddings being non manglik or manglik matrimony are also simple. There are no mandatory rules and regulations to be followed. The couple is getting married in the Buddhist temple which is licensed as a legal marriage venue.

7. Jain Weddings
There are three major pre-wedding ceremonies in Jain wedding namely Lagana Lekhan, Lekhan Patrika and Sagai. The two of the most notable and important rituals of Jain wedding are Pheras and Kanya Daan.

8. Christian Matrimony
In Christain wedding or matrimony, the father is received by the groom’s best man with flowers. The priest reads the psalm followed by the couple taking the vows. In Christain wedding, the reception is also a grand affair where the people feast, dance and sing to celebrate the union of couple. 

9. Kashmiri Wedding
In Kashmiri wedding or matrimony which is very similar to the Hindu wedding, a ceremony called ‘Diugun’ is performed which resembles the ‘Haldihanth Rasam’. When the groom comes with his family, both the father of the couple exchange nutmeg as a sign of friendship.

10. Maharashtrian Matrimony

11. Marwari Wedding
Pithi Dastoor is one of the significant traditional pre-wedding ceremonies that continue up to the wedding or marriage day. On arriving at the place of bride, the groom being non manglik or manglik has to hit the toran tied on the doorway with aneem stick. After that, it is followed by the Pheras and Kanyadaan ritual. 

12. Pahari Wedding
In wedding ceremony or matrimony called Dhulyaraj, the groom is received with warm welcome. The bride gets ready for the Pheras wearing traditional Dupatta called ‘Pichorra’ which is followed by the Vidai ceremony.

13. Punjabi Matrimony
On the day of wedding, the bride receives the white and red colored bangles known as Chuda from her maternal uncle or mama. It is followed by the Ghara Ghardoli ritual where the groom and bride are bathed in the holy water taken from Gurudwara. The couple exchange garlands on the wedding night and for performing other rituals, they are taken to the mandap.

14. Sikh Matrimony
Sikh wedding is held in the same way as Punjabi wedding. The only difference is that it is held during the daytime in Gurudwara where the recitations of Ardaas are performed.
